Now That Obama Is IN

Now That Obama Is IN… Almost ANYTHING Obama Is IN:

By Kitty AlvaIf it’s associated with President Barack Hussein Obama’s Inauguration it’s in fashion… from the J. Crew,  royal blue and candy pink Coats adorable First Daughters, Sasha and Malia wore, to the First Cadillac nicknamed “The Beast”, but there are some things you should steer clear from.President Obama was the epitome of presidential… he was the bold stripe in that perfectly patriotic red, tie against a sea of blue. And if he was the tall stripe our First Lady Michelle Obama was the star on our flag.

ISN’T SHE LOVELY! Michelle Obama glowed and was picture perfect in tailored gold. The embellished suit by Cuban-American designer Isabel Toledo was the perfect shade of yellow against the First Lady’s radiant ebony skin. Everything about the way she looked was brilliant… the sage, J. Crew gloves and patent, grass green shoes just popped… Jimmy Choo did it again.

Here comes the BUT… the white dress,  ivory, silk-chiffon, designed by Jason Wu to be exact. The gown wasn’t exactly what I envisioned for the magical and historic moment. It was reminiscent of former First Lady Nancy Reagan’s faux pas, the overpriced in a recession, ivory dress with the asymmetrical, one shoulder strap. The textured material translated into what looked like my mother’s white, cotton and chenille frock. It made her regal stature look frumpy and the length got in the way interrupting what should have been an amazing flawless moment. The President and First Lady kept stepping on and rearranging the gown at every first dance… this was uncomfortable to watch and must have been the same for them. The moment so large NOTHING could overshadow it (not even that gown), it brought tears of joy to the world, myself included.

Another Presidential Obama must… a hat. Hats are oh so posh… Senator Ted Kennedy looked debonair in his but the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin gets my respect and vote for that unpredictable, style-stopping, grey hat, studded with Swarovski crystals… a bow Valentino himself would be proud of. Proof the hat designed by Luke Song out of Detroit is HOT… when I called Mr. Song about the fabulous hat, in his shop in “Motor City” he answered in true Hollywood fashion, “… TALK TO MY AGENT,” then hung up on me. Not quite the freeway of love… being rude is NEVER in style. There’s no denying now that President Obama is in the White House there’s a little Jackie O. there, the bonus, those of us who didn’t get to be there the first time, get to feel like we’re living the Camelot dream. Being American and just being alive to witness history makes us all a part of the fabric of this great country but if you want to do it with some style just add a hat, drive that Caddy, wear a splash of bold color and you’ll shine like a star too.
